Samui News: Plans for new cruise terminal revealed

In a recent announcement, Deputy Minister of Transport, Manaporn Charoensri, revealed plans for a new cruise terminal set to open on Koh Samui in 2032. This ambitious project is part of a broader strategy to boost tourism in Surat Thani province.

During a visit to Koh Samui with Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit, the Deputy Minister reviewed the progress of several large-scale infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the tourism sector. One of the most significant developments is the proposed cruise terminal, a project that the Marine Department has studied in detail, requiring an investment of 12.1 billion baht.

The terminal is planned to be constructed on a 47-rai site at Laem Hin Khom in the Taling Ngam subdistrict. The location was selected for its deep waters, which provide natural protection from winds, and the ample land available for building the port. The study also considered emergency response capabilities and the area's commercial potential.

The study concluded that a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) would be the most viable financing option for this project. The economic benefits are projected to be at least 46 billion baht over 37 years, with an expected Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) exceeding average standards. The Marine Department has submitted this study to the Ministry of Transport, which will present the proposal to the cabinet for approval. A decision from the cabinet is expected next month.

Construction of the new cruise terminal is slated to begin in 2029 and be completed by 2032. Once operational, the terminal is expected to host approximately 120 cruise ships annually, bringing in at least 180,000 additional visitors to Koh Samui each year. This project is anticipated to make a significant contribution to the growth of tourism in the region and further establish Koh Samui as a leading international travel destination.
